Coronavirus and Swimming Pools

EMS medic alert logo
According to the CDC, there is no evidence that COVID-19, the disease caused by the Coronavirus, can be spread in swimming pool or spa water if it's properly maintained. What that means is if you are diligent about testing your pool water and spa water, and keeping the water sanitary through adding the proper amount of pool chemicals, your swimming pool will be perfectly safe to use. What a relief, right? Could you imagine going through a summer in the Bakersfield heat without being able to cool off and kick back in your own pool? We sure don't want to even think about it! Thankfully there will be at least one activity we can still enjoy. It's also one more reason you should leave your swimming pool maintenance to a professional pool cleaning service like Bakersfield Pool Services and Maintenance. Healthy Swimming Tips

Keeping your pool and spa water sanitary has always been the foundation of a healthy, well-maintained pool. However, during a global pandemic with a virus as contagious as COVID-19, it's more important than ever. We've done the research and are applying our findings into our standard operating procedures. Unfortunately, we can't be at every customer's pool 24/7, so here are our tips to maintain safe pool and spa water in-between our regular pool service visits.
  1. Test chlorine and pH levels regularly: Chlorine is what kills germs in pool water. The ideal level for your pool should be 1.0 ppm. Does that mean if your chlorine level is 0.7 your water is susceptible to coronavirus and other germs? No, not necessarily. 1.0 ppm is just what the data shows as the optimal level for chlorine working as intended. If your pool gets lots of direct sunlight, or tends to collect dirt and debris from the yard, or gets used often, you should measure a few times per day. A common misconception about chlorine is the smell. When a pool is properly chlorinated there should be no noticeable odor. When you can smell the chlorine what you're actually smelling is the result of the chemical reaction between chlorine and bacteria in the water. So if you smell that familiar scent usually associated with chlorine, that's usually a good sign it's time to add more. Chlorine's partner in fighting off bacteria and other germs is your pool's pH level. The pH level measures the acidity of your swimming pool water and can actually determines how effective chlorine is  at killing germs. When pH levels get to high, Chlorine is less effective. Keep your water's pH level between 7.2 - 7.8 for peak germ fighting power and less skin and eye irritation for swimmers. That's also the average ph level of the human body. If you or your swimmers' complain about eye and irritation it's because your water has fallen out of the pH range. One more thing... DO NOT keep your pool chemicals out in the open or within a child's reach.
  2. Disinfect all highly touched surfaces. Think about all the parts of a pool that get touched nearly every time someone goes swimming. Surface areas like like ladder handles and step railings are prime suspects.
  3. Practice good hygiene outside the pool. Wash your hands often. Wear cloth face masks if you have to go out in public, and stay at least six feet from other people at all times.
  4. If you're sick, don't swim. Don't allow anyone in the pool who is experiencing symptoms of Coronavirus, or any other illness such as diarrhea.
  5. Don't swallow the pool water.
Keeping your pool water chemistry within those healthy ranges, practicing good hygiene and using physical distancing are the best practices recommended by the CDC and pool experts like Bakersfield Pool Services and Maintenance.
